'Pit Bulls and Parolees' Season 16 Episode 1: New rescue Alicia came in malnourished but makes quick

The Villalobos team deal with two new rescues, as Tia Torres helps a schoolteacher adopt a friendly dog

Spoilers for 'Pit Bulls and Parolees' Season 16 Episode 1 'Unexpected Call'

It's a brand new season of 'Pit Bulls and Parolees' and the Villalobos team has their hands full with two new rescues and a prospective new parent in a city that always keeps them guessing. Not all their plans turned out the way they expected them to, but for every down there's an up — or at least, that's the hope that Tia Torres and her family cling to.

This episode follows three stories. One is relatively short, a feel-good, happy short of a homeless man who turned in a puppy, unable to take care of him any more. Mariah brings Miguel along on his first rescue, and they soon find themselves acquainted with a little black dog they quickly name Mr Crowley. Mr Crowley turns out to be surprisingly well trained, healthy, and even socializes well with other dogs — it's not long before he finds himself a home.

Finding a pet suitable for new prospective parent Lauren's home, however, proved to be a bit more of a challenge. Lauren, a schoolteacher and fitness instructor, needed a non-pitbull social dog, which didn't leave Tia and her family with many options. After Trout's surprising shyness, Sweetcakes and Mossy were the top contenders. A quick test proved Sweetcakes to be more comfortable in the city, and Lauren was ecstatic to bring the beautiful, golden lab home. However, in an unfortunate turn of events, Sweetcakes bit Lauren's mother, forcing the Villalobos family to take him back.

Not all surprises are a bad thing, however. After finding an extremely malnourished pit bull the team names Alicia, the team works to slowly nurse her back to health. Poor Alicia had had an infestation of parasites, which was in large part to blame for her malnourishment. A check-up and prescription from veterinarian Dr Samantha saw Alicia on more of a puppy's diet for a few weeks — small but more frequent servings of food. With a careful diet and a lot of love, Alicia made a shockingly quick recovery, regaining almost full health in no time.

Mr. Crowley, Sweetcakes and Mossy have all found new homes. While Alicia has not yet been adopted, she is now healthy, happy and ready to meet her new family, whoever they may turn out to be. The next episode of 'Pit Bulls and Parolees' airs on August 1 on Animal Planet.
